Remote licenses

How it works

The Backbone remote licenses allow Backbone to sync with a JIRA instance without having to install Backbone there. Each license is time restricted and allows a specific number of endpoints it supports.

As soon as you start an integration, Backbone will check each connected JIRA if it has a Marketplace license. If not, it will consume one of the endpoint licenses. If all are being used, you will receive an error while starting the integration. As soon as you stop all integrations which use this JIRA as an endpoint, the endpoint license will be released and is ready to be used by other integrations.

Remote license are installed only on a Server-based Jira. If you are synchronizing Jira Server with Jira Cloud, a remote license has to be installed on the Server side. On Cloud — install a regular Marketplace license.

Example license file

Below you can see an example for a license file. You can verify your expiration date and the amount of your remote endpoints there.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

    <holder>IT Unicorns Inc.</holder>
    <creator>K15t Software GmbH</creator>
    <product>Backbone Issue Sync for Jira</product>
    <policy type="PRODUCT_KEY">com.k15t.backbone.backbone-issue-sync</policy>
    <policy type="EXPIRATION">2017-07-10</policy>
    <policy type="MAX_REMOTE_ENDPOINTS">1</policy>

License installation instructions

The backbone-issue-sync-license.xml file has to be placed on the JIRA instance where Backbone is installed. You don't have to install anything in the JIRA instance of your partner.

In order to install a Backbone remote license, you simply have to place your license file with the name "backbone-issue-sync-license.xml" into the folder <JIRA_HOME>/data/backbone-issue-sync. It might be the case that you have to create the "backbone-issue-sync" folder yourself. If you are using JIRA Datacenter, please place the license into the shared home directory in the corresponding path and not in the local home directory.
