Why do I need a prefix when creating a document or a copy, and saving a version?

In Scroll documents, you are asked to enter a prefix in the following situations

  1. Creating a new 'On-boarding' document.
  2. Creating a Blank document
  3. Copying an existing document
  4. Saving a version of a document

Now, before we get into the 'why', let us first understand what happens under the hood when we perform these actions.

Creating a Blank/On-boarding document

When you create a blank document or a new on-boarding document, new confluence pages are created in your page tree. These pages can be found in your page tree at the following location - Document (or Scroll Documents). This special page is created when you create your first Blank/On-boarding document, and is known as the Default document location. It is a special placeholder page we create to organize the pages of your documents.

Copying a document

When you create a copy of a document, under the hood, we create a replica of all the pages in the document and their hierarchy and place it in your page tree at the following location - Document (or Scroll Documents)

Saving a version

When you save a version of a document, under the hood, we also create a replica of all the pages in the document and their hierarchy and place it in your page tree at the following location - Document (or Scroll Documents) → Document Versions → Versions of <Name of your document>

As you can see that in all the above situations, new pages are being created and added to your page tree. Now, Confluence does not support multiple pages with the same titles in a given space. Therefore,  there are chances that the titles of the new pages created by the actions listed above might clash with existing pages in your space.

Therefore, in order to avoid any such page title clashes, we add the 'prefix' to the titles of all the pages that are created by the app.
