Why does the table of contents or page tree macro not show in my Viewport site?

We disable Confluence’s table of contents macro and page tree macro by default because Viewport’s help center theme already comes with a global table of contents and page tree feature that should make those macros redundant in your site.

Read on to understand the benefits of these features over the corresponding macros.

The table of contents in the help center theme

Viewport’s help center theme already comes with a global table of contents feature on every article page. You can enable it from Edit theme → Templates → Article → Table of contents.

We deliberately disable the table of contents macro on your Viewport articles, so that you don’t end up with any duplicates on the page. Our TOC feature has advantages over the macro, for example:

Once enabled, it’s automatically shown on all your articles. With the macro you have to insert it on all pages one by one
It’s visible even when the user scrolls down on a long page. In contrast, the macro is only visible if the user is on top of the page. That means, it’s easier for a user to navigate to specific sections, no matter where they are on the page.

We recommend to get rid of the macro on your page and simply rely on the TOC that we generate for you on the right-hand site of every article page.

The page tree in the help center theme

All articles pages in Viewport will always show an article navigation on the left hand side of the page.

We deliberately disable the page tree macro on your pages, so that you don’t end up with a duplicate navigation on the page. Our article navigation has advantages over the macro, for example:

It’s automatically shown on all your articles. With the macro you have to insert it on all pages one by one
It’s visible even when the user scrolls down on a long page. In contrast, the macro is only visible if the user is on top of the page. That means, it’s easier for a user to navigate to specific pages, no matter where they are on the page.
It’s optimized to the look and feel of the Help Center

We recommend to get rid of the macro on your page and simply rely on the article navigation that we generate for you on the left-hand site.

If you would like to show only a few selected pages, not the whole page tree, we recommend using the Filter by label macro (formally content by label macro).
