Customize URL Paths

Specify the individual paths of your URLs to create fully customized Scroll site links.

Scroll Sites not only lets you define the base URL for your site but also specify all individual paths of your URL. This helps you create customized links to your Scroll Sites content.

By default, Scroll Sites' URLs are constructed as follows:

https:// your-company . scroll-sites.com/ language-code / content-source / version / variant / content

Modifying any part of your URLs requires that Scroll Sites has view and edit permissions on the specific Confluence pages you want to change.

Add a Site Path (Optional)

Optionally, you can choose to append a site path to your base URL. This would look as follows:

https:// your-company . scroll-sites.com / site-path

Adding a site path will let you host multiple Scroll sites under the same subdomain.

Choose Between A Flat Or Hierarchical URL Structure For the Content Path

The last part of your URLs are reserved for the content path. This is by default the title of the Confluence page that the content is built on.

There are two structures you can choose from for the content path in your URL:

  • Flat: A short and concise URL with only one hierarchical level. Choose flat for enhanced usability as URLs are easy to read and won’t change/break if the Confluence page is moved in the page hierarchy.
    Example: my-space/my-page

  • Hierarchical: A longer URL that reflects the exact hierarchy of the page in your site. Choose hierarchical for enhance search engine optimization (SEO) as it gives search engines a better semantic understanding of your content.
    Example: my-space/my-parent-page/my-child-page

Change the URL structure

By default, your URL Structure for the content path is set to flat. To change the structure from flat to hierarchical:

  1. From the My Sites screen, click the card that has your site’s name.

  2. From the left sidebar, click Site Settings > Site URL.

  3. Under URL structure, click the radio button Hierarchical.

  4. From the Site settings screen, click Publish changes or Save changes in the top right.

Your change will now automatically trigger a new site update (for sites set to live updates) or be applied with your next site update (for sites set to manual updates).

Customize the Content Source Path

When you add a content source, you can specify the URL path for that particular content source. You can also modify the content source path any time after adding the content source and going live with your site.

Please note that changing the content source URL path for a site that is already live will modify all links to this content source. All previously shared links will break.

To change your content source path:

  1. From the My Sites screen, click the card that has your site’s name.

  2. From the left sidebar, click Site Settings > Content. You will find a card per content source that is added to your site.

  3. From the card of the content source you want to edit, click the pen icon.

  4. From the Edit URL path dialog, in the URL path field enter a URL path of your choice.

  5. Click Save. The dialog will close.

  6. From the Site settings screen, click Publish changes or Save changes in the top right.

Your change will now automatically trigger a new site update (for sites set to live updates) or be applied with your next site update (for sites set to manual updates).

Customize the Version and Variant Path

If you’re using a Scroll Document content source, the version path is always part of your content URLs. The variant path is only part of the URL if your document document source has at least one variant set up.

For full control over the display of URLs, Scroll Sites allows you to specify the version and variant path independent of the version or variant names that you have defined in Scroll Documents.

To change your version or variant path for a Scroll Document:

  1. From the My Sites screen, click the card that has your site’s name.

  2. From the left sidebar, click Site Settings > Content. You will find a card per content source that is added to your site.

  3. From the card of the Scroll Document want to change the path for, click the blue x/x versions or x/x variants indicator. The version or variant table for that document will expand.

  4. From the row of the version or variant you want to edit, click the pen icon in the far right of the table.

  5. From the Edit version or Edit variant dialog, in the field URL path enter a URL path of your choice.

  6. Click Apply. The dialog will close.

  7. From the Site settings screen, click Publish changes or Save changes in the top right.

Your change will now automatically trigger a new site update (for sites set to live updates) or be applied with your next site update (for sites set to manual updates).

Customize the Content Path

By default, the content path is derived from a URL-safe version of the Confluence page title. The default path is set when the Confluence page is first added to a Scroll site and does not change when the Confluence page title changes.

Did the preview report warn you about unstable content URLs? Make sure that Scroll Sites has view and edit permissions for the Confluence page(s) so it can set a default value or set the content path manually as described below.

For further customization, you can specify the content path for any Confluence page that is part of a Scroll site (as long as it’s rendered as part of a live site). The content path can be modified independent from the Confluence page title, and vice versa.

To change the content path:

  1. Navigate to your page in Confluence

  2. Click the Scroll Sites content byline icon (located right under the page title). The byline will read 'Scroll Sites'.

  3. In the pop out, click into the URL path field.

  4. In the field, enter a URL path of your choice. The value needs to be unique per content source or document version or variant. The maximum number of characters allowed is 80.

  5. Click the check icon to confirm.

Your change will now automatically trigger a new site update (for sites set to live updates) or be applied with your next site update (for sites set to manual updates).

Please note that changing the path will affect all Scroll sites that the modified page is part of. Defining a different content URL for each of your sites is not possible.
