When migrating a custom domain from one Viewport or Scroll site to another Scroll site, it’s important to consider various steps and respect the order of these steps.
If you follow the instructions on this page, you will minimize any downtime for your custom domain.
Start with the described steps only after you’re done setting up your new site (i.e. your new site is ready to receive traffic):
-
Click Domains & Security > Remove custom domain to remove the custom domain of your existing site.
-
In your DNS tool, delete the two CNAME records that you had previously set up for your subdomain.
-
Wait until the screen from step #1 indicates that the custom domain been completely removed from your site. Once done, your custom domain is fully offline and not available to users anymore.
-
Click Domains & Security > Set up a custom domain to open your new site’s custom domain settings.
-
Start the setup process, which involves setting up two new CNAME records. Please note, the provided values will be different than for the CNAME records you had previously set up.
Proceed as instructed on Connect a Custom Domain . -
Wait until all statuses change to Success. Close the dialog.
-
Wait until the status of your custom domain in the Domains & Security screen changes from finalizing to active.
-
From the My Sites screen, click the card that has your site’s name.
-
From the left sidebar, click Site Settings > Site URL.
-
Check the box Connect custom domain.
-
From the Site domain drop down, select the custom domain you just set up.
-
From the Site settings screen, click Publish changes or Save changes in the top right.
Your change will now automatically trigger a new site update (for sites set to live updates) or be applied with your next site update (for sites set to manual updates).
With your next site update, your custom domain will be connected to the new site.
Please expect some downtime for your custom domain between steps 3 and 6.
