Set a Default Language

At site creation, your site’s default language is automatically set to English. You can change this from your Site settings.

You can include content in additional languages when you publish a Scroll Document content source with translations to your site.

Why Set a Default Language?

The default language is the (predominant) language of your site’s content.

Defining a default language for your site is useful for the following reasons:

  • The default language is used to assign the right language attribute to the pages of your Scroll site (e.g. <html lang=“en”>). This metadata helps screen readers and search engines return language specific results.

  • If more than one language is added to the site, the default language is used to initialize the site and as a fallback when no language is specified.

  • If you use the help center theme and set your site language to one of our officially supported languages, the site will automatically adjust to those languages. This means, error messages and standard texts in places like the footer or search page will always show in the language that is selected in the site (using a picker in the site’s footer).

Once set, all content added to your site will automatically be marked as being in the default language.

Content managed with Translations for Scroll Documents will be marked according to the language specified in Scroll Document’s document manager.

If you select a language as the site’s default language that isn’t contained in your Scroll Document or specific version(s) of your Scroll Documents, then those documents or versions will be removed from your site.

Set a Default Language For Your Site

To change the default language for your site from English to any other language:

  1. From the My Sites screen, click the card that has your site’s name.

  2. From the left sidebar, click Site Settings > General.

  3. Under Default language, from the drop down select a language of your choice.

  4. From the Site settings screen, click Publish changes or Save changes in the top right.

Your change will now automatically trigger a new site update (for sites set to live updates) or be applied with your next site update (for sites set to manual updates).

If using Scroll Documents with translations, please note:

  • A Scroll Document or version of a Scroll Document that doesn’t contain the language you have set as default cannot be added as a content source to your site.

  • Scroll Sites will remove your document as a content source, if the language that is specified as the site’s default language is removed at a later point from your document or from versions of your document that you have selected in your site.

Additional Languages

The site settings screen might list additional languages. This is only the case if at least one content source your have added to your site is a Scroll Documents that includes translations in more than one language.

Learn how to add translated Scroll Documents to your site on Display Translated Content.

When publishing translated Scroll Documents in your site, your site’s visitors will be able to navigate between the pages in the different languages using a language picker in the site.

List of Officially Supported Languages

The help center theme will automatically adjust to your selected language if it is one of our officially supported languages. These are:

  • English

  • German

  • French

  • Spanish

  • Portuguese

  • Russian

  • Swedish

Error messages and standard texts in places like the footer or search page will show in the language that is selected in the site.
