Backbone Work Sync 5.18.0
May 2025
Backbone Work Sync 5.18.0 is now available. This release includes a required update due to upcoming API changes, an improvement to attachment syncing in JSM projects and also addresses a navigation bug.
If you are syncing between Data Center and Cloud, and the configuration is managed on the Data Center side, you must upgrade to version 5.18.0 as soon as possible (before the end of May) to avoid sync disruptions.
Important Notice for Data Center to Cloud Synchronizations
Everyone syncing between Data Center and Cloud (configured on the Data Center side) needs to update to the latest Backbone version.
Why is This Update Needed?
An API used for synchronization is being deprecated by Atlassian at the end of May. After this deprecation, Backbone Work Sync will no longer detect updates from the Cloud side. Consequently, any changes in the Cloud instance will not be synchronized to Data Center unless you update to the latest Backbone version. Please note that this dependency on the Cloud API is independent of your current Jira version.
Action Required
Update to version 5.18.0 to ensure continued synchronization functionality.
Additional Information
The new API we’re using for detecting changes and updates offers improved speed. These performance improvements by Atlassian were made possible by not waiting for all issues to be indexed. However, due to this, it also has inconsistencies and may occasionally not return all updates to Backbone. To mitigate this, we've implemented an additional search mechanism (back-up query) to enhance reliability.
The back-up query now runs by default every 30 minutes, covering the previous one-hour timeframe. This provides a 30 minute overlap to ensure no data is missed. This slightly exceeds Atlassian’s recommended 25 minute overlap for added reliability. If needed, you can adjust these values in the advanced settings using the following advanced settings:
sync.outgoingBackupInterval
sync.outgoingBackupTimeframe
You can also deactivate the backup query by putting it to 0s. More information about these settings can be found in the advanced settings.
Attachments in Description Field (JSM)
Previously, attachments added to the description field in JSM projects did not sync correctly when public comments and attachments were enabled to sync. These attachments appeared as broken previews on the receiving instance. With this release, they now sync to the other instance without problem.
